This private school specializes in teaching students with a reading or learning disability and promoting alternative teaching methods to ensure success in the classroom. Assets School was seeking designs for a replacement campus. The competition included meeting with teachers and faculty members over several weeks to develop a program and to review design propositions. Final presentation included a PowerPoint slideshow, posters (including photo-realistic renderings), a massing model, and proposed phasing of the work.
The overall plan for Assets School was developed to allow various segments of the student population to function individually while integrating into a cohesive whole. Each part has been placed to provide an appropriate learning setting and to provide a connection to the natural environment.
The library stands as the heart of the school and acts as a connecting element(s) between all the separate parts. The library is centrally located along with other key spaces utilized by all students at the school. The administrative functions are also placed centrally to promote interaction between the students and administrators.
The section designed for the youngest students is adjacent to the main entrance, requiring only simple navigation for these students to find their class areas.
The middle school student section complements the younger student area and together embrace an exterior landscaped courtyard. This courtyard varies in hardscape, softscape, vegetated, and play areas.
The high school functions separately from the rest of the school, but has access to resources shared by the entire student population. The high school is centered around its own exterior courtyardwhich is more refined, but still contains a variation in hardscape and softscaped areas.
I worked on this competition while with the Hawaii office of RIM Architects.
