Adjacent to the crater at the Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawai`i there has been a hotel since the late 1800s. The current building was constructed in 1941, had been through several remodels, and was again in need of an update. This 29.000 square foot (2.695 square meter) facility includes a 33 room hotel, dining facility, gift shops, lounge, and various other amenities.

The oldest portion of the building is on the US National Historic Register and was restored to a similar condition as the day it originally opened. New furniture, a renovated commercial kitchen and dining room with exterior deck, and renovated guestrooms including new bathroom fixtures and finishes were incorporated into the design.

Feedback from the public after opening was immensely positive, with many people commenting that the ambiance of the original design had been reestablished.

I worked on this project while with the Hawaii office of RIM Architects and the drawings were completed in Autodesk Revit.

Official website of the hotel can be found here.
